Mythical Mont Aigoual

The southern Cévennes are a geological, climatic and religious crossroads. In this Mecca of the Camisard resistance during the Wars of Religion, Protestantism has permeated the architecture. The landscapes are varied, with almost every type of vegetation: the high garrigues of the Pays Viganais, the schistose Cévennes covered with chestnut groves and the forest-covered slopes of the Aigoual massif.

From the foothills of Mont Aigoual, this free hike offers some of the finest panoramic views of the Cévennes, culminating in the famous ascent of the 4000 steps.
